# Astrocartography Line Meanings Source: https://www.selfgazer.com/tools/astrocartography-calculator (free astrocartography calculator: enter a birth date, time and place to map every planetary line and read the lines near any city). Astrocartography is a world map of where each planet was on one of the four angles of the sky at the moment of birth: rising (Ascendant), setting (Descendant), overhead (Midheaven) or underfoot (IC). Each of the Sun, Moon and eight planets draws four lines, forty in all. A line describes a quality that tends to be turned up near it; it is read for reflection, and it does not forecast events. ## The Four Kinds of Line - **Ascendant lines (AS).** Where the planet was rising over the eastern horizon at your birth. Ascendant lines color how you come across and how you feel in your own body: your energy, your first impressions, the self you lead with. - **Descendant lines (DS).** Where the planet was setting in the west. Descendant lines show up through other people: partners, close friends, rivals, and the kinds of relationship you find yourself drawn into. - **Midheaven lines (MC).** Where the planet stood highest in the sky, on the meridian. Midheaven lines touch vocation, reputation and public life: the work you reach toward and what you become known for. - **IC lines (IC).** Where the planet sat directly beneath your feet, on the far side of the Earth (the Imum Coeli, or lowest heaven). IC lines touch home, family, roots and the private life you return to. ## Distance A line is usually read as strong within about 300 km (200 miles), present out to about 700 km (450 miles) and faint to about 1,000 km (600 miles). ## What Each Planet's Lines Bring Forward ### Sun Lines (identity, vitality and purpose) - **Sun Ascendant** (https://www.selfgazer.com/tools/astrocartography-calculator#sun-as-line): On your Sun Ascendant line, the core of who you are tends to come straight to the surface. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris on charts from 1900 to 2060, every line falls within about one arcminute of longitude, roughly two kilometers on the ground. The accuracy of your map depends far more on the accuracy of your birth time. ## Questions ### What Is Astrocartography? Astrocartography is a map of where each planet was on one of the four angles of the sky at the moment you were born: rising, setting, overhead or underfoot. The astrologer Jim Lewis developed it in the 1970s and named it Astro*Carto*Graphy. Each planet draws four lines across the world, and astrologers read a place by the lines that pass near it. ### What Do the Four Lines Mean? An Ascendant line marks where the planet was rising, and it colors how you come across and feel in yourself. A Descendant line marks where it was setting, and it shows up through partners and close relationships. A Midheaven line marks where it stood overhead, and it touches vocation and public life. An IC line marks where it was underfoot, and it touches home, family and roots. ### How Close to a Line Do I Need to Be? Most astrologers feel a line most strongly within about 300 kilometers (roughly 200 miles), still present out to about 700 kilometers (450 miles), and faint beyond that. This calculator lists every line within 1,000 kilometers of a place and marks each one strong, present or faint by distance. ### Why Does Astrocartography Need an Exact Birth Time? The Earth turns one degree every four minutes, so four minutes of birth time move every line about 111 kilometers (69 miles) east or west at the equator. A birth time rounded to the hour can shift the lines by more than 1,500 kilometers. Use the time on your birth certificate if you can. ### Does Moving to a Line Change My Birth Chart? Your birth chart stays the same wherever you go. Astrocartography shows which planets would sit on the angles of a chart drawn for another place at your birth moment, which is called relocation. Astrologers read that as the planets that come forward more strongly while you live there or visit. ### Are Some Lines Good and Others Bad? Each line carries the quality of its planet. Venus and Jupiter lines are usually felt as easier and Saturn, Mars and Pluto lines as more demanding, but no place is simply lucky or unlucky. A demanding line can be where you grow most, and an easy one can be where you coast. What matters is how you meet what the place draws out of you. ### Why Are the Lines Curved? Ascendant and Descendant lines curve because the horizon meets the sky at a different angle at each latitude. They bend toward the poles and join the Midheaven or IC line where the planet stops rising and setting. Midheaven and IC lines follow single meridians; on this map's Equal Earth projection, meridians curve gently toward the poles, so those lines curve with them. ### How Accurate Is This Map? Lines are drawn in mundo, from each planet's true right ascension and declination at your birth, as astro.com draws them by default. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris on charts from 1900 to 2060, every line falls within about one arcminute of longitude, roughly two kilometers on the ground. The accuracy of your map depends far more on the accuracy of your birth time.
