## What a Chart Ruler Is

Every sign has a ruling planet: Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and so on. The planet that rules your [rising sign](https://www.selfgazer.com/blog/what-is-rising-sign-astrology) is the ruler of your chart. Because the rising sign is the doorway of the chart, its ruler is something like the host: its sign describes the style in which you move through life, and its house describes where your attention keeps returning.

A Virgo rising has Mercury as chart ruler. If that Mercury sits in the 7th house, much of the chart's energy flows into partnership and conversation with one other person.

## Traditional and Modern Rulers

Before the outer planets were discovered, Mars ruled Scorpio, Saturn ruled Aquarius and Jupiter ruled Pisces. Modern astrologers often give Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune. For those three rising signs, the calculator shows both rulers. Traditional astrology uses only the first, and many modern astrologers read both, with the traditional ruler as the main one.

## Why the Chart Ruler Needs a Birth Time

The chart ruler depends on the rising sign, which changes about every two hours. Its house also depends on the birth time and place. With an uncertain time, the result tells you how many minutes earlier or later your rising sign, and so your chart ruler, would change.

## How Accurate Is It?

Positions come from Selfgazer's astrology engine, the same one that draws the chart in your astro room: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris, planets agree to within half an arcminute and house cusps to within a tenth of an arcminute. Your local birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, including past daylight saving changes. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored.

## Questions

### How Do I Find My Chart Ruler?

Find your rising sign, then its ruling planet. Aries rising is ruled by Mars, Taurus by Venus, Gemini by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Virgo by Mercury, Libra by Venus, Scorpio by Mars (modern: Pluto), Sagittarius by Jupiter, Capricorn by Saturn, Aquarius by Saturn (modern: Uranus) and Pisces by Jupiter (modern: Neptune).

### What Does My Chart Ruler's House Mean?

It shows the area of life where the energy of your whole chart tends to gather: career, relationships, home, study and so on. Many astrologers read it as one of the strongest themes in a chart.

### Can the Sun or Moon Be My Chart Ruler?

Yes. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer, so Leo rising has the Sun as chart ruler and Cancer rising has the Moon.

### Should I Use the Traditional or Modern Ruler?

Both are in common use. Traditional astrology uses only the seven visible planets. Many modern astrologers read the outer planet as a co-ruler. Read both placements and see which describes you better.

### Can I Find My Chart Ruler Without a Birth Time?

No. The chart ruler comes from the rising sign, which needs your birth time and place.
