## What the Part of Fortune Describes

The Part of Fortune, or Lot of Fortune, comes from Hellenistic astrology, where it described the body, health and the circumstances life hands you. Today it is often read as a place of natural ease: where things tend to go well when you stop pushing, and what brings you contentment. Its sign describes the quality of that ease and its house where it tends to appear.

## How the Part of Fortune Is Calculated

The Part of Fortune sits as far from your Ascendant as the Moon sits from the Sun. In a day chart, when the Sun was above the horizon at birth, the formula is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. In a night chart, when the Sun was below the horizon, the Sun and Moon swap places: Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. The calculator works out whether you were born by day or by night and uses the matching formula, as Hellenistic astrologers did. Some modern software uses the day formula for everyone, which gives a different result for night births.

## Why It Needs a Birth Time

The Part of Fortune moves with the Ascendant, about one degree every four minutes. It needs your birth time and place, and the result tells you how many minutes earlier or later it would have changed sign.

## How Accurate Is It?

Positions come from Selfgazer's astrology engine, the same one that draws the chart in your astro room: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris, planets agree to within half an arcminute and house cusps to within a tenth of an arcminute. Your local birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, including past daylight saving changes. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored.

Which formula applies depends on whether the Sun was above the horizon when you were born.
