Profection Year Calculator
Find which house of your chart is activated this year, the planet that rules it and exactly when the year begins and ends. You need your birth date and your rising sign, or your birth time and place to calculate it.
Profection Table by Age
Every age from birth to 96, grouped by the house it activates. The cycle repeats every 12 years. Calculate your profection year above to add your signs and time lords.

How Annual Profections Work
Profections move one house per year. From birth to your first birthday you are in a 1st house year, from your first to second birthday a 2nd house year, and so on. At 12 the cycle returns to the 1st house, and again at 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96. The sign on that house, counted by whole signs from your rising sign, names the planet that rules the year. For the full method and its history, read the profection year chart guide.
Traditional Time Lords
Profections come from Hellenistic astrology, which used seven visible planets as rulers. This calculator follows that tradition:
- Aries: Mars
- Taurus: Venus
- Gemini: Mercury
- Cancer: Moon
- Leo: Sun
- Virgo: Mercury
- Libra: Venus
- Scorpio: Mars
- Sagittarius: Jupiter
- Capricorn: Saturn
- Aquarius: Saturn
- Pisces: Jupiter
Modern astrologers sometimes substitute Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius and Neptune for Pisces. The traditional ruler remains the usual choice for profections because the technique was built around it.
Using Your Profection Year
Look at the activated house to see which area of life comes forward, then at the time lord: its sign, house and aspects in your birth chart, and the transits it makes and receives during the year. A year ruled by a well-placed planet tends to feel more supported; a year ruled by a planet under pressure can bring that pressure to the surface.
Profection Questions
What Is a Profection Year?
Annual profections are a Hellenistic timing technique. Each year of life activates one house of the birth chart, starting with the 1st house at birth and moving one house forward on every birthday. The activated house and its ruling planet set the themes of that year.
How Do I Calculate My Profection Year?
Take your current age in whole years and divide by 12. The remainder plus one is your profected house: age 29 leaves a remainder of 5, so it is a 6th house year. Count the same number of signs forward from your rising sign to find the profected sign. Its traditional ruler is your time lord.
What Is the Time Lord or Lord of the Year?
The time lord is the traditional ruler of the profected sign. Transits to and from that planet, and the condition of the planet in your birth chart, are watched closely during the year. The calculator uses traditional rulers, so Scorpio years are ruled by Mars, Aquarius years by Saturn and Pisces years by Jupiter.
When Does a Profection Year Start?
On your birthday. The year runs from one birthday to the day before the next, so it rarely matches the calendar year. Some astrologers also track monthly profections within the year, which this calculator does not cover.
Do I Need My Birth Time?
Only to find your rising sign. Your profected house depends on age alone. If you already know your rising sign, choose it from the list. If not, enter your birth time and place and the calculator will work it out.
Which House System Do Profections Use?
Profections are traditionally counted by whole signs from the rising sign: the rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. That is the method used here, whatever house system you use for the rest of your chart.
