Planetary Hours Calculator

Each hour of the day has a planetary ruler, counted from sunrise in the old Chaldean order. Choose your location to see today's 24 planetary hours, which planet rules the hour running now and the quality tradition gives it.

Sunrise and sunset, and so every hour, depend on where you are.

What Planetary Hours Are

Planetary hours are one of the oldest timekeeping systems in astrology. The daylight is divided into twelve hours and the night into twelve more, and each hour takes its character from one of the seven classical planets. The first hour after sunrise belongs to the planet that rules the day of the week, which is why Sunday is the Sun's day and Saturday is Saturn's. Astrologers used the hours to choose a moment for a task. Read today, they are also a simple practice of attention: a way to notice the quality of the hour you are in.

How They Are Calculated

  1. Find sunrise, sunset and the next sunrise for your location and date.
  2. Divide the daylight into twelve equal hours and the night into twelve equal hours.
  3. Give the first hour after sunrise to the ruler of the weekday.
  4. Give each following hour to the next planet in the Chaldean order. Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon: the seven classical planets from slowest to fastest as seen from Earth. After the Moon the order starts again at Saturn.

Because the hours share out the daylight, their length follows the season. In New York a day hour runs about 75 minutes at the June solstice and about 46 at the December solstice, while the night hours do the reverse. Near the equator both stay close to 60 minutes all year.

The Ruler of Each Day

  • Sunday: Sun. The Sun's day.
  • Monday: Moon. The Moon's day.
  • Tuesday: Mars. Tiw's day, the Germanic god matched with Mars (Spanish martes).
  • Wednesday: Mercury. Woden's day, matched with Mercury (Spanish miércoles).
  • Thursday: Jupiter. Thor's day, matched with Jupiter (Spanish jueves).
  • Friday: Venus. Frigg's day, matched with Venus (Spanish viernes).
  • Saturday: Saturn. Saturn's day.

Planetary Hour Sequence for Each Day of the Week

The rulers repeat in the same order every week, everywhere on Earth. Only the clock times change with the place and the season. Day hours count from sunrise and night hours from sunset.

The Quality of Each Hour

Hours of Saturn

Weight, patience and form. Tradition gave Saturn hours to building, land, endings and long commitments, and advised against starting light matters in them. What here is worth the slow work, and what is ready to be set down?

Hours of Jupiter

Generosity, trust and a wider view. Tradition gave Jupiter hours to teaching, law, religion, asking favors and anything meant to grow. What gives this day meaning, and where could you be more generous?

Hours of Mars

Heat, effort and courage. Tradition gave Mars hours to physical work, competition, surgery and cutting through what is stuck. Where does your energy want to push, and what is it pushing against?

Hours of the Sun

Clarity, warmth and the self in plain view. Tradition gave Sun hours to matters of honor, health, leadership and meeting people in authority. What are you here to give, and are you giving it openly?

Hours of Venus

Ease, beauty and affection. Tradition gave Venus hours to friendship, love, art, pleasure and making peace. What do you value here, and how gently are you holding it?

Hours of Mercury

Thought, speech and exchange. Tradition gave Mercury hours to writing, study, trade, accounts and messages. How is your mind moving right now, and is it listening as well as talking?

Hours of the Moon

Feeling, memory and rhythm. Tradition gave Moon hours to home, family, travel by water and anything that changes from day to day. What are you feeling underneath what you are doing?

Planetary Hours Questions

What Are Planetary Hours?

Planetary hours are an old way of giving each hour of the day a planetary ruler. The daylight and the night are each divided into twelve parts, and each part takes its character from one of the seven classical planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn. Astrologers have used them since antiquity to choose a time for a task and to notice the quality of the moment.

How Are Planetary Hours Calculated?

Find the time of sunrise, sunset and the next sunrise for your location. Divide the daylight into twelve equal hours and the night into twelve equal hours. The first hour after sunrise belongs to the planet that rules the weekday, and each later hour moves to the next planet in the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, then Saturn again.

Why Are Planetary Hours Longer or Shorter Than 60 Minutes?

Each planetary hour is one twelfth of the daylight or one twelfth of the night, so its length follows the season. In summer the day hours are long and the night hours short; in winter the reverse. Only near the equinoxes, or near the equator, do both come close to 60 minutes.

What Is the Chaldean Order?

The Chaldean order lists the seven classical planets from the slowest-moving, as seen from Earth, to the fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon. Planetary hours follow this order hour by hour. Because 24 hours step through the list three times and three more places, each new day starts three planets further on, which gives the order of the weekdays.

Which Planet Rules Each Day of the Week?

Sunday belongs to the Sun, Monday to the Moon, Tuesday to Mars, Wednesday to Mercury, Thursday to Jupiter, Friday to Venus and Saturday to Saturn. The day's ruler also rules the first hour after sunrise, and the names of the weekdays in many languages still carry these planets or their Germanic counterparts.

When Does the Planetary Day Begin?

At sunrise. The hours between midnight and dawn still belong to the previous day's night, so at 3 AM on a Friday you are in Thursday's night hours. The calculator follows this rule when it shows the hour running now.

What Happens Near the Poles?

Planetary hours need a sunrise and a sunset. During the midnight sun or the polar night there is no horizon crossing to divide, so the calculator says so and shows no hours for that date.

Why Do Other Sites Give Slightly Different Times?

Small differences come from how sunrise is defined (the top edge of the Sun or its center, with or without atmospheric refraction), from the exact coordinates used for a city, and from rounding. This calculator uses the almanac definition: the Sun's upper edge on a sea-level horizon with standard refraction. Times usually agree with other careful sources within a minute or two.
