In the angel-number tradition, the digit 0 stands for wholeness or potential, and it strengthens the digits beside it. Modern numerology gives 0 no keyword, since no digit sum ever reduces to 0. A sighting of 0 means most when you check what you were thinking or deciding at that moment.
The Number 0 in Pythagorean Thought
Pythagoras and his followers taught that number is the principle of order in the cosmos. They gave the first numbers names, monad (1), dyad (2), triad (3), tetrad (4), and so on up to decad (10), and they swore an oath by the tetractys, a triangle of ten dots in rows of 1, 2, 3 and 4. The monad was treated as the source from which numbers come. The ancient Greeks had no zero as a number, so their list of names has no place for 0.
Zero came into mathematics later, through Indian mathematics. Brahmagupta gave rules for calculating with zero in 628 CE. Because the Pythagorean naming system never included zero, the Greek tradition offers nothing to read into the digit 0. Any reading of 0 has to come from the later traditions on this page.
The Number 0 in Modern Numerology
Modern numerology is the system shaped in the early 20th century by L. Dow Balliett, in books from 1905 and 1908, and by her student Juno Jordan. Pythagoras did not write it. A reading adds the digits of a number to get its digit sum, then adds again until one digit remains. Balliett is credited with the master numbers 11 and 22, which the method does not reduce further, and 33 was added later.
The method leaves no room for 0. A digit sum never reduces to 0, so 0 is not a root number, meaning the single digit a reading ends on. Modern numerology gives 0 no keyword. The digits beside 0 do have keywords.
Take 404. Modern numerology gives each 4 the keywords work, order, structure and foundation. The angel-number tradition says the 0 between them strengthens those digits. That turns the sighting into a question about habits: where is order already holding something up in your week, and where does the structure still need a foundation?
The Number 0 in Other Traditions
The angel-number tradition is the one source on this page that gives 0 a reading of its own. Doreen Virtue, a former psychotherapist turned New Age author, popularized angel numbers in Healing with the Angels (1999) and Angel Numbers 101 (Hay House, 2008). The tradition's list of meanings runs from 111 through 999 and ends with 000, which it reads as oneness with God and a cycle beginning. Social media carries the idea further, and her books still circulate.
In 2017 Virtue was baptized as a Christian. That year she publicly renounced her New Age teachings, including the angel material, and Hay House ended its relationship with her. Readers who meet 000 in her books or online should know that history before they weigh the reading.
Seeing 0 Again and Again
