Draconic Chart Calculator

Your draconic chart is your birth chart measured from the Moon's North Node, a layer many astrologers read as the soul's intention beneath the personality. Enter your birth details to see your draconic Sun, Moon, Ascendant and every planet, and where the two charts meet.

Needed for the draconic Ascendant and Midheaven.

Sets the time zone and the angles. Optional if you don't know your birth time.

What a Draconic Chart Is

The tropical zodiac most Western astrologers use begins at the March equinox. The draconic zodiac begins instead at the Moon's North Node, the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's on its way north. Every planet keeps exactly the same relationship to every other, so the chart's aspects and patterns do not change. Only the signs and degrees move. Because the lunar nodes have long been read as a chart's axis of growth, the draconic chart is often described as the soul's chart: the inner aim that the familiar birth chart expresses in daily life.

How the Conversion Works

  1. Find the longitude of the North Node in your birth chart, for example 1°56' Aquarius, which is 301.9° of the zodiac.
  2. Subtract it from every planet and angle. A Sun at 16°08' Scorpio (226.1°) becomes 284.2°, or 14°11' Capricorn.
  3. The North Node itself lands at 0° Aries and the South Node at 0° Libra.

The calculator uses the mean North Node, as every Selfgazer chart does, and the same ephemeris, held to the Swiss Ephemeris within half an arcminute.

Reading the Draconic Signs

Most astrologers start with the draconic Sun, Moon and Ascendant and read each as a deeper layer of its birth chart counterpart. A short key to the inner orientation each sign describes:

  • Aries: an urge to begin, to act from courage and to meet life directly.
  • Taurus: a longing for steadiness, presence in the body and what endures.
  • Gemini: a hunger to learn, connect and put experience into words.
  • Cancer: a need to belong, to nurture and to keep what is tender safe.
  • Leo: a wish to create, to love openly and to be wholeheartedly oneself.
  • Virgo: a devotion to craft, usefulness and the care of small things.
  • Libra: a search for harmony, fairness and true meeting with another.
  • Scorpio: a pull toward depth, truth and transformation.
  • Sagittarius: a search for meaning, freedom and a wider view.
  • Capricorn: a call to responsibility, mastery and building what lasts.
  • Aquarius: a reach toward independence, insight and the common good.
  • Pisces: a yearning for unity, compassion and the inner life.

Draconic Chart Questions

What Is a Draconic Chart?

A draconic chart is your birth chart measured from the Moon's North Node instead of the March equinox. The North Node becomes 0 degrees Aries and every planet keeps its distance from it. Many astrologers read the draconic chart as the deeper layer of the chart: the soul's intention or inner orientation beneath the personality shown by the tropical chart.

How Is a Draconic Chart Calculated?

Subtract the longitude of the North Node from every position in the chart. If your North Node is at 10 degrees Gemini (70 degrees of the zodiac) and your Sun at 25 degrees Leo (145 degrees), your draconic Sun is at 75 degrees, or 15 degrees Gemini. The aspects between planets stay exactly the same; only the signs and degrees change.

Which North Node Does This Calculator Use?

The mean North Node, the smoothed average position of the Moon's node, which Selfgazer uses in every chart. Some astrologers prefer the true node, which wobbles around the mean by up to about a degree and a half, so a planet close to a sign boundary can land in a different draconic sign.

Do I Need My Birth Time?

Only for the draconic Ascendant and Midheaven, which also need your birth place. The North Node and the planets move little in a day, so their draconic signs are reliable from the birth date alone, except for the Moon, which can change draconic sign during the day. The calculator marks it when that happens.

Why Are My Draconic Signs So Different From My Normal Signs?

The North Node moves backward through the zodiac, taking about 18.6 years for a full circle, so depending on your birth year the draconic zodiac is turned by anything from 0 to 360 degrees. People born when the node was near 0 Aries have a draconic chart close to their tropical one; others find every planet shifted by several signs.

How Do Astrologers Use the Draconic Chart?

Most read it alongside the tropical chart. A draconic Sun or Moon in a different sign adds a second, more inward layer to the familiar one. Draconic planets that fall on tropical planets or angles, within a degree or two, are given special weight, and some astrologers compare two people's draconic charts for a sense of deeper connection.
