What a Transit Chart Shows
Your birth chart is a picture of the sky at the moment you were born. The planets kept moving. A transit is a moving planet forming an angle to one of the points in that picture, or passing through one of its houses. A transit chart lays the two side by side: your natal planets fixed where they were, and the planets of a chosen day moving through them.
Astrologers have used transits for centuries to describe the quality of a stretch of time. Selfgazer reads them as a mirror: a Saturn square to your Sun describes a season of weight around your sense of purpose, and the useful question is how that weight shows up in you and what it asks you to see.
How to Read Your Results
- The moving planet sets the kind of experience: the Moon a mood, Mercury a train of thought, Mars a push, Saturn a test of structure, Pluto a slow, deep change.
- The natal point says where in you it lands: your Sun your sense of self, your Moon your feelings, your Venus what you love and value, your Ascendant how you meet the world.
- The aspect describes the meeting. A conjunction concentrates the two, a trine or sextile lets them cooperate, and a square or opposition holds them in tension.
- The orb is the distance from exact. Under a degree, a contact is at its strongest. Applying contacts are still tightening; separating ones are easing.
- The house a planet crosses names the area of life it moves through, from home and family in the 4th to career and reputation in the 10th.
Fast and Slow Transits
The Moon crosses your whole chart in about four weeks, so its contacts color an afternoon. The Sun, Mercury and Venus take about a year and Mars about two, so their contacts last a few days. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign and Saturn two and a half, and their contacts can last weeks or months. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that a single contact, with its retrograde passes, can run for one or two years and describe a whole chapter of life. Read the slow contacts first; the fast ones are the daily weather on top of them.
Reading Transits Reflectively
A transit describes a quality of time, and the same contact can feel like pressure in one life and like clarity in another. How you meet it is yours. The calculator gives the facts plainly so you can hold them against your own experience: notice what has been asking for your attention lately, and see whether the contacts in force describe it.
How This Calculator Works
Positions come from the same astrology engine that draws Selfgazer's charts and the planets today pages, held to the Swiss Ephemeris within half an arcminute for the planets and a tenth of an arcminute for house cusps. Your birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, including past daylight saving changes. The North Node is the mean node, and houses are Placidus or Whole Sign. For one planet's whole year, see the 2026 ephemeris or the retrograde calendar.
Transit Questions
What Is a Transit Chart?
A transit chart sets the planets' current positions, or their positions on any date you choose, against your birth chart. It shows which houses of your chart the moving planets are crossing and which of your natal planets and angles they are aspecting.
How Do I Read My Transits?
Start with the slow planets. A contact from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto lasts weeks to months and describes a longer chapter, while the Moon's contacts pass in hours. Then notice which natal planet is touched and by which aspect: conjunctions concentrate, squares and oppositions bring tension, trines and sextiles bring ease.
What Orbs Does This Calculator Use?
Transit orbs are tighter than natal ones so that a contact appears when it is felt and leaves when it is done: 3 degrees for the Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars, 2 degrees for Jupiter and Saturn, and 1.5 degrees for Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the North Node. Only the five major aspects are listed.
What Do Applying and Separating Mean?
An applying transit is still moving toward the exact angle, so its theme is building. A separating transit has passed exact and is easing. A slow planet that turns retrograde can apply, separate and apply again, which is why some transits come in three passes.
Do I Need My Birth Time for Transits?
Transits to your planets work without a birth time, except for the Moon, which moves about 13 degrees a day. The houses the transits cross and contacts to your Ascendant and Midheaven need an exact birth time and place.
What Are the Current Transits?
The current transits are the positions of the planets right now. This page shows today's positions before you enter anything, and the Sky Today pages list every planet's sign, degree, retrograde status and the aspects in effect, updated every 15 minutes.
Do Transits Predict What Will Happen?
Selfgazer reads transits as a description of the quality of a period. A Saturn transit can coincide with a sense of weight and responsibility, and what you make of it is yours. The calculator lists the contacts so you can notice how they meet your own experience.
How Is a Transit Chart Different From a Progressed Chart?
Transits use the real positions of the planets on a date. Secondary progressions move the birth chart forward symbolically, one day of planetary motion for each year of life. Both are timing techniques; transits are the more widely used and the easier to check against the sky.
