What a Planetary Return Is

A planetary return is the moment a planet comes back to the exact zodiac degree it held when you were born. Each planet keeps its own rhythm, so returns mark cycles of very different lengths: Venus every year or so, Jupiter every twelve years, Saturn about every thirty.

Astrologers read a return as the completion of one turn of that planet's cycle in your life and the start of the next. The quick returns are small, regular markers. The slow ones, Saturn and Chiron above all, come only a few times or once, and are often felt as passages between chapters of life.

Why Returns Can Happen Three Times

Every planet except the Sun and Moon appears to move backward for part of its cycle, as Earth passes it or it passes Earth. When your natal degree lies inside one of these retrograde loops, the planet crosses it forward, back and forward again. The calculators list every pass; all of them belong to one return.

Planetary Return Questions

What Is a Planetary Return?

A planetary return is the moment a planet comes back to the zodiac degree it occupied at your birth. It completes one cycle of that planet in your chart.

Which Planetary Return Matters Most?

The Saturn return, around ages 29 and 58, is the best known because it comes rarely and lasts long. Jupiter's twelve-year return and the Chiron return near 50 are also widely followed.

Why Is There No Pluto Return?

Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the zodiac, so no person lives long enough for it to return. The calculator gives your Pluto square instead.

Do I Need My Birth Time?

Not for the slow planets. Your birth date gives Saturn, Jupiter, Chiron, the nodes and Pluto to within a few days. Venus and Mars move faster, so a birth time makes their dates exact to the day.
