Pluto Return Calculator
Pluto needs about 248 years to come back to the degree it held at your birth, so no person has a Pluto return. Enter your birth date to find the Pluto transits you do live through: the square to your natal Pluto and, for some, the opposition.
Quick Answer
No person has a Pluto return: Pluto takes about 248 years to come back to its birth position. People live through the Pluto square instead, at very different ages: 37 for someone born on January 1, 1960, but 59 for someone born on January 1, 2010. The United States had its Pluto return in 2022, when Pluto came back to 27°33' Capricorn, its position on July 4, 1776.
Age at the Pluto Square by Birth Year
For someone born on January 1 of each year. Pluto's uneven speed spreads the square across five decades of life.

The United States Pluto Return
On July 4, 1776, Pluto stood at 27°33' Capricorn. Pluto came back to that degree on Feb 21, 2022, Jul 11, 2022 and Dec 29, 2022, the first Pluto return in the nation's history. It is the most widely discussed Pluto return because a country, unlike a person, lives long enough to have one.
Why There Is No Personal Pluto Return
Pluto orbits the Sun once every 248 years. A return to its birth position would come around age 248, so in a human life Pluto covers between a quarter and a half of the zodiac. Countries and institutions can have Pluto returns; people cannot.
What people do live through are Pluto's aspects to itself: the square, a quarter of the way round, and for some generations the opposition, halfway round.
Why the Pluto Square Comes at Such Different Ages
Pluto's orbit is the most elongated of the planets. Near the Sun it crosses Scorpio in about twelve years; far from it, it spends over thirty years in Taurus. So people born when Pluto was moving quickly meet their Pluto square in their late thirties, while people born when it was slow wait until their late eighties or beyond. The table below shows how far apart those ages are.
What the Pluto Square Is Read As
Pluto describes depth, power and the slow turning over of what has outlived its purpose. Its square to itself is often read as a period when something long buried asks to be looked at honestly. It invites a patient relationship with change.
How This Calculator Works
The calculator finds Pluto's longitude at your birth, then every moment until age 100 when Pluto stands 90 or 180 degrees from it. Pluto moves so slowly that your birth date is all it needs.
Positions come from the engine behind every Selfgazer chart: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Against the Swiss Ephemeris the planets agree to within half an arcminute. Each pass is found by scanning the planet's path and narrowing every crossing of your natal degree to the minute, with a finer scan around each station so a brief touch before the planet turns is not missed. Your birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules.
Pluto Return Questions
Does Anyone Have a Pluto Return?
No person does. Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the zodiac, so its return to a birth position comes long after a human lifetime. Nations and institutions founded long enough ago can have one.
What Is the Pluto Square?
The Pluto square is the transit of Pluto 90 degrees from its birth position. Depending on the generation it comes between the late thirties and the late eighties, and retrograde motion usually makes it exact three or five times over about two years.
Will I Have a Pluto Opposition?
Only if you were born when Pluto was moving quickly through its signs, and only late in life. The calculator checks to age 100 and lists an opposition if one falls within that span.
Do I Need My Birth Time?
No. Pluto moves at most about two arcminutes a day, so your birth date gives the same dates.
