What a Nodal Return Is

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path. They move backward through the zodiac and complete a circle in 18.6 years, so nodal returns come near ages 18.6, 37, 56, 74 and 93.

The North Node is often read as the direction of growth, and the South Node as what is already familiar. A nodal return is a time when that direction comes into focus again. Many people notice it as a season of choosing, when the pull toward what is new and what is known both become clear.

The Nodal Reversal

About 9.3 years after each return, the transiting North Node reaches your natal South Node. This nodal reversal is often read as a time when old habits and gifts ask to be looked at again, so you can carry forward what serves you and set down the rest.

Mean Node and True Node

The mean node moves smoothly backward; the true node wobbles around it by up to a degree and a half. This calculator uses the mean node, as every Selfgazer chart does, so each return and reversal is exact once. Dates with the true node usually differ by a few days to a few weeks.

How This Calculator Works

Without a birth time, the North Node is placed where it stood at noon on your birth date. The node moves about three arcminutes a day, so the dates move by a day at most. The calculator recalculates for the first and last minute of your birth day and tells you how far the dates can move.

Positions come from the engine behind every Selfgazer chart: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Against the Swiss Ephemeris the planets agree to within half an arcminute. Each pass is found by scanning the planet's path and narrowing every crossing of your natal degree to the minute, with a finer scan around each station so a brief touch before the planet turns is not missed. Your birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules.

Nodal Return Questions

What Is a Nodal Return?

A nodal return happens when the transiting North Node comes back to its position in your birth chart. The nodes circle the zodiac in 18.6 years, so returns come near ages 18, 37, 56, 74 and 93.

What Is a Nodal Reversal?

Halfway between returns, near ages 9, 28, 46, 65 and 84, the transiting North Node reaches your natal South Node. The nodes then stand exactly reversed from where they were at your birth.

Who Has a Nodal Return in 2026?

The North Node moves between 22°50' Aquarius and 12°10' Pisces during 2026. A first nodal return reaches people born between May 23, 2007 and May 21, 2008, who are 17 to 19 during 2026. A second nodal return reaches people born between October 10, 1988 and October 9, 1989, who are 36 to 38 during 2026. A third nodal return reaches people born between March 1, 1970 and February 28, 1971, who are 54 to 56 during 2026. A fourth nodal return reaches people born between July 20, 1951 and July 18, 1952, who are 73 to 75 during 2026. A fifth nodal return reaches people born between December 8, 1932 and December 7, 1933, who are 92 to 94 during 2026.

Does the Calculator Use the Mean or True Node?

The mean node, the convention every Selfgazer chart uses. It moves steadily, so each return is exact once. The true node can make several passes and its dates differ by days to weeks.

Do I Need My Birth Time?

No. The node moves about three arcminutes a day, so your birth date is enough for dates accurate to a day.
