What Your North Node Sign Describes

The lunar nodes are two points, always exactly opposite each other. The South Node describes gifts and habits that come easily, the ground you know. The North Node describes the qualities you grow into by reaching past that comfort, often slowly and with some awkwardness. Each North Node sign has its own article, linked from your result.

Your South Node is always in the sign opposite your North Node: a North Node in Libra has its South Node in Aries, a North Node in Cancer has its South Node in Capricorn.

How the North Node Sign Is Calculated

The nodes move backward through the zodiac, completing a circle every 18.6 years and spending about 19 months in each sign. This calculator uses the mean node, the smoothed average position that Selfgazer charts use everywhere. The true node wobbles around it by up to about 1.7 degrees, and the result shows both when they fall in different signs.

Eclipses happen when a New or Full Moon falls near the nodes, so the sign pair your nodes occupy is also the sign pair where the eclipses fell around your birth.

Why Birth Time Matters

The North Node changes sign on only about 1 day in 571. For almost every birthday the date alone gives the sign, and the birth time adds the exact degree and the house. If the North Node changed sign on your birth date, the calculator shows both signs and tells you so.

How Accurate Is It?

Positions come from Selfgazer's astrology engine, the same one that draws the chart in your astro room: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris, planets agree to within half an arcminute and house cusps to within a tenth of an arcminute. Your local birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, including past daylight saving changes. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored.
