What Your Sun Sign Describes

The Sun describes your sense of self: what gives you energy, what you are proud of and the person you are becoming. Astrologers often describe it as the center of the chart, the light every other placement is read against. Your Sun sign is the style of that light, whether Aries directness, Taurus steadiness or Pisces imagination. Read more about the Sun in astrology.

How the Sun Sign Is Calculated

The Sun moves through the zodiac at about one degree a day and spends about 30 days in each sign. Because it never turns retrograde, its sign changes on nearly the same dates every year. The dates still shift by a day or two, because the calendar year is about six hours shorter than the solar year and the leap day corrects it every fourth year.

The calculator converts your local birth time to Universal Time with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, then finds the Sun's tropical longitude at that instant. Each sign is a 30 degree slice of the ecliptic, starting from the March equinox at 0 degrees Aries.

Why Birth Time Matters

Between 1900 and 2060, the Sun changed sign on about 3% of days, roughly 1 day in 30. If your birthday is one of them, the sign depends on the hour you were born. Without a time, the calculator checks every hour of your birth date (in every time zone, if you leave out the place) and shows each sign the Sun could have held.

With your birth time and place, the result also gives the exact degree and the house, the area of life where this placement works.

Born on the Cusp?

Astrologically there is no blend at a cusp: the Sun is in one sign or the next, and the change happens at a precise minute. People born on the day of the change are often told different signs by different sources, because a newspaper's date range cannot account for the year and time zone. Add your birth time and place and the calculator gives the exact answer, with how many minutes it was from the change.

How Accurate Is It?

Positions come from Selfgazer's astrology engine, the same one that draws the chart in your astro room: VSOP87 planetary theory through Astronomy Engine, with Chiron from Swiss Ephemeris tables. Tested against the Swiss Ephemeris, planets agree to within half an arcminute and house cusps to within a tenth of an arcminute. Your local birth time is converted with your birthplace's historical time zone rules, including past daylight saving changes. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored.

Sun Sign Dates

The day each Sun sign began in US Eastern Time across 1950 to 2050. The range is why cusp birthdays need a birth time: the same calendar date falls in different signs in different years.

Sun Sign Questions

What Is My Sun Sign?

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied at your birth. For most birthdays the date alone is enough. For birthdays within a day of a sign change, the year, time and place decide it, which is what the calculator above checks.

Why Do Zodiac Sign Dates Differ Between Sources?

The Sun enters each sign at a different minute every year, and that minute falls on different calendar dates in different time zones. Published date ranges round this to fixed days, so for cusp birthdays they can disagree. The calculator works from the actual position of the Sun.

Can I Find My Sun Sign Without a Birth Time?

Usually. The Sun changed sign on about 3% of days between 1900 and 2060, roughly 1 day in 30. On those days the calculator shows both possible signs until you add your birth time and place.

Is My Sun Sign the Same as My Star Sign?

Yes. Star sign, zodiac sign and Sun sign all mean the sign of the Sun at birth in the tropical zodiac, which is the zodiac Western astrology uses.

What Does the House of My Sun Mean?

The sign describes how the Sun works; the house describes where in life it works: home, work, relationships, friendships and so on. Houses need your birth time and place, because they turn with the Earth once a day. Add both and the calculator gives the house in Placidus or Whole Sign houses.
